Blackstone portfolio company Trans Maldivian Airways recently announced the recipients of their Zuvana Scholarship Program, which awarded scholarships to five Maldivian students to sponsor their training to become pilots. The students were chosen from over 200 applicants.
The scholarships were awarded on August 5th at a ceremony by the nation’s President Abdulla Yameen, with five of his Cabinet Ministers and over 100 dignitaries in attendance. The event was broadcast live on a Maldivian TV channel. In his speech, President Yameen thanked Blackstone for its long-term investment in the Maldives through Hilton Hotels and Trans Maldivian Airways.
Since Blackstone acquired TMA in 2012, the company has seen a 15% growth in employees, with over 50% of employees and 60% of pilots now being local Maldivian nationals. TMA is the world’s largest seaplane operation transferring over 950,000 passengers annually with over 85% of passengers transferred in less than two hours from the airport to their resort. TMA operates a fleet of 44 aircrafts with 500 peak landings per day. At the event, the company also launched its new slogan: “the sun, the sand, the sea, and the seaplane” to emphasize that the Maldivian tourism experience is not complete without a seaplane ride.
