Since joining Blackstone in 2004, Mr. O’Connell has advised clients in restructurings involving over $80 billion of liabilities and financings involving $15 billion of new capital. His company-side representations include AIG, American General Finance (now Springleaf), Babcock & Wilcox, Genco Shipping & Trading, ILFC, Specialty Products Holding Corp. (SPHC), W. R. Grace & Co. and Winn-Dixie Stores. He has advised creditors in the restructurings of Excel Maritime Carriers, Jefferson County, OSG, Simmons Bedding, Solutia and ZIM Integrated Shipping. He has also advised sponsors in special situations, including York Capital on its investment in Cecon (Davie Shipyard), Roust Trading on its acquisition of CEDC and funds managed by Blackstone on various investments.
Mr. O’Connell graduated magna cum laude from Notre Dame and received an MBA with honors from the Wharton School. He serves as a guest lecturer at Columbia Law School and Harvard Business School.
